Professional Teeth Cleaning

Dental Prophylaxis

A dental prophylaxis is a standard dental cleaning in the absence of periodontal disease.  Prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for preventing the progression of gingivitis.

Professional teeth cleaning is an effective procedure in maintaining oral health.  The benefits include:

  • Plaque removal. Plaque buildup and calculus (also referred to as tartar), both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems and bone/tooth loss. Even with a proper home brushing and flossing routine, it can be very difficult to remove all debris, bacteria and deposits from gum pockets.
  • A healthier looking smile. Tooth staining from dietary habits can affect esthetics of a smile.  Prophylaxis can be an effective treatment in ridding the teeth of these unsightly stains.
  • Fresher breath. Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease. The routine removal of plaque, calculus and bacteria can noticeably improve halitosis and reduce infection.

Dental prophylaxis can be performed at our office or by your general dentist depending upon your individual needs. We recommend that prophylaxis be performed usually twice annually as a preventative measure.
